COLD SPRING HARBOR, New York, May 22

A fatal crash took a man’s life in Cold Spring Harbor on Tuesday.
Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives were still investigating the cause of the crash as of Wednesday evening.
Police officials are withholding the man’s name from the press, but believe they have identified him, according to Sgt. Walker of the Second Squad.
Police said that at 10:56 p.m. on Tuesday, a man driving a new model Dodge Charger northbound on Woodbury Road near Hawxhurst Road seemingly lost control and crashed into several trees. The car then burst into flames. When police arrived at the scene, the man was found outside of the car.
“The car traveled about 10 to 15 feet off of the road,” Walker said on Wednesday. “The occupant was able to get out of the vehicle, but the car was engulfed in flames; possibly due to a ruptured gas tank.”
The man was taken to Huntington Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Walker effectively ruled out any criminal involvement with the crash, as a fatality in a one-car accident is not typically seen as malevolent, he said.
As of Wednesday night, though, officials still didn’t know “how or why” the crash occurred. Detectives asked that anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
