As a part of Saturday’s homecoming festivities, the Northport-East Northport School District opened up the day with a special unveiling before the Tigers took on the Wildcats of Walt Whitman High School.
During a ceremony at Northport High School, the district revealed its inaugural Athletic Hall Of Fame class – headed up by Bob Brady, the hall’s president.
Twelve individuals were admitted to the hall, listed in order of graduation date: Rob Chipman, William Ketcham, Bobby Wine, Walter “Buddy” Becker, Frank Ahrenhold, Kathy Kearns, Tom Kennedy, Sue Ryan, Craig McEwen, Christine Micholopolus, David Sumner and Cami Ruck.
The 1980 Northport boys’ soccer team and Northport’s Dunne family – made up of Tim, Greg Kelly, Rich, John and Eileen – were also named to the hall.
Inductees were selected through nominations by members of the community. Once the hall’s nominating committee approved recommendations, they were forwarded to the board of directors – made up of Artie Glad, Drew Cronin, Rich Castellano, Don Strasser, Al Cicio, Bob Brady, Patricia Gardiner, Irene McLaughlin and George Searing – to be voted on. A two-thirds majority vote by the board is required for a nominee to be inducted.
Moving forward, each class will include a number of individuals, one team and one family – all of whom must have been associated with the Northport High School athletic program in one way or another. All nominees must be at least 10 years removed from participation in the program.
