Elwood’s Blue Wave youth wrestling program turned the page on the 2014-2015 season earlier this month as 18 members of the grades 1-8 program traveled to the 2015 NY-USA Wrestling State Championships in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y.
“Overall I was very happy with the results,” said Tom Giaramita, head coach and founder of the program, which has over 90 members and had six wrestlers place in the state tournament.
The results from the tournament are posted alongside this article, but Giaramita said he was proud of the efforts put forth by each and every Blue Wave wrestler this season, despite some bad luck at the state tournament, which was held at Sullivan County Community College.
“Some of the brackets just didn’t work out,” he said.
In all, though, as Blue Wave is always trying to do, Giaramita said this season was about getting the wrestlers – who hail from Elwood and surrounding towns like Northport and Huntington – into tip-top shape to take on the challenge of the high-school level.
One such wrestler is Jared Albert, an eighth-grader who has been with the program since he was in first grade. Giaramita wished Albert the best as he heads into Elwood-John Glenn High School nest season.
“He’s a longtime Blue Wave wrestler and really put his heart and soul into it,” Giaramita said. “We’re going to miss him and his family greatly and we’re hoping he can get things going at the high school level for John Glenn.”
