Win and you’re in.
That’s what was on the Wildcats’ minds on Tuesday as Whitman welcomed the Musketeers of Central Islip (1-16) for a League II showdown.
Needing just one more win to secure a spot in the 2015 Suffolk AA playoffs, Whitman’s offense exploded in dominant 13-1 win over the Musketeers; they’re in.
On the mound, Taylor Epstein recorded the win for Whitman as the girls ensured their playoff spot for the second straight season. Last year, after finishing league play with a record of 14-5, the Wildcats entered postseason play as the no. 11 seed, but ultimately fell to Commack, which was awarded the no. 6 seed.
This year, however, the Wildcats will hope for a different result once the playoffs finally roll around next Friday.
With four games left to play in League II as of press time on Wednesday, the Wildcats sat in a half-game behind third place in the division. The top of League II is heavily weighted with talented teams this year as Whitman is one of five teams that had already qualified.
Whitman will see one of those teams this Friday as they travel to Bay Shore (9-7) for a 5 p.m. scheduled start. The Wildcats got the best of the Marauders during the first matchup of the two schools on April 14 as Whitman prevailed 4-1.
Nicole Algierie and Aleysha Midgett were stellar in that effort as the duo combined for all four of Whitman’s RBIs, while Linda Powell held down the fort on the mound with a complete game performance.
