Lloyd Harbor Resident Rosel Rodenhurst Dies At 102

Rosel E. Rodenhurst, a longtime resident of Lloyd Harbor, died Dec. 30, 2014. She was 102.

Born in Lauterecken, Germany, she grew up with three brother and four sisters, but upon losing her home and fiancé during World War II, she decided to come to America in December 1949. There, she visited two of her brothers at their East Northport and St. Albans, Queens, homes.  Becoming fond of Long Island, her great-niece Michelle Holmes of Greenlawn, she eventually met her husband, Edward Rodenhurst, and settled in Lloyd Harbor.

While living in Lloyd Harbor, she became an active member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cold Spring Harbor and the Huntington Crescent Club; she also spent time volunteering at Huntington Hospital.

Her hobbies, Holmes said, consisted of gardening, bowling, golfing, swimming and traveling – especially to Germany, to Aruba, on an Alaskan cruise and on an African safari.  Staying active, along with eating organic fruits and vegetables, her family said, was her secret to longevity.

She was also especially fond of animals, Holmes said, as she was consistently found with a pet dachshund, cat or even an animal she befriended outside.

She is survived by her sister, Hella Kasper, who still resides in Germany, and her extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews: Hella Benitt of Colchester, Vt.; Michael Wiest of Warren, N.J.; Roswitha Palumbo of Naples, Fla.; Gisela Nagel, Wolfgang Grater, Sybille Kapfenberger and Ingeborg Kasper, all of Germany; Valerie Sprenger and Ray Hildenbrand of Colorado; Richard Hildenbrand of Texas; Virginia Madelung and Gary Madelung of Kentucky; Bill Madelung of Massachusetts; Michelle Holmes, Christopher Benitt, Tania Savolle, Daniella Palumbo, Brian Wiest, Peter Wiest, Danielle Holmes, Garrett Holmes, Marc Savolle, Stefan Savolle, Gavin Wiest and Kolby Wiest. In addition to her family, she also had several loving friends in and around the Town Of Huntington: Ruth Fahlbusch of Huntington, Margot Walsh of Lloyd Harbor, Maria Dwyer of Huntington Station, Nancy Francis of Port Jefferson, Gisela Nightingale of Lloyd Harbor, and Angelica Hollweg of Huntington. She was predeceased by her husband.

Arrangements were made by M.A. Connell Funeral Home in Huntington Station on Jan. 5. A church service was held at the St. John’s Episcopal Church the next day, and a burial was made at the St. John’s Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her name can be made to Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, Inc. 505 Main Street, Northport, NY 11768.
